Description
Slickline Knuckle Joint
Technical Description and Specifications
The Slickline Knuckle Joint is a fundamental component of the slickline bottom-hole assembly (BHA), specifically designed to introduce controlled flexibility and articulation into the tool string. Its primary application is in highly deviated, high-angle, or horizontal wells where the tool string must pass through tortuous wellbore paths, landing nipples, or sharp doglegs without hanging up or creating excessive friction. It also ensures that the top of the BHA can remain vertically aligned with the jars during vertical jarring operations.
Key Technical Specifications and Operation
Function: To provide one or more points of articulation in the tool string, allowing the BHA to bend and navigate changes in wellbore trajectory and to maintain proper alignment during jarring.
Design: A two-piece joint consisting of an upper and lower sub connected by a heavy-duty pivot pin or ball-and-socket mechanism, allowing the two halves to pivot freely up to a specific angle (e.g., $10^\circ$ to $15^\circ$ off-axis).
Articulation Range: Defined by the maximum angle of deflection the joint can achieve before metal-to-metal binding occurs. This range is critical for passing specific dogleg severities.
Jarring Efficiency: Positioning a Knuckle Joint directly below the jars ensures the jarring impact is delivered straight down the axis of the tool string, even if the tools below are resting on the low side of a deviated pipe.
Operational Advantage: Dramatically reduces the risk of the tool string sticking (key-seating) and minimizes wear on the internal bore of the tubing and completion profiles.
Connection (Customizable):
Standard interfaces include proprietary slickline pin threads.
Custom order connections are available to ensure compatibility with all major proprietary quick-connect systems (e.g., QLS, HQC) and non-standard tool string threads.
Material (Customizable):
Main Body and Pin: High-strength alloy steel (e.g., AISI 4140/4340), engineered to withstand high tensile and compressive jarring loads without failure.
Custom material options are available, including NACE MR0175 compliant alloys for sour service and specific materials for extreme High-Temperature/High-Pressure (HTHP) environments.
Critical Parameters (Customizable Deflection and Rating):
Maximum Angle: Available with custom pivot pins to achieve a specific, non-standard maximum deflection angle tailored for exceptional dogleg severities.
Tensile/Compressive Load Rating: Rated for the maximum force it can sustain, which can be customized with high-yield material pins for operations involving heavy jars or stems. Clients must specify the required pivot angle and the maximum anticipated jarring force when placing a custom order.
