Technical Description and Specifications
The GU Pulling Tool is a specialized internal pulling tool designed to retrieve downhole devices equipped with internal fish necks. While it shares a similar profile to the GS tool, the GU is specifically designed as a shear-up-to-release tool. This makes it the ideal choice for applications where downward jarring is required to set a device, or where the operator prefers an upward jarring action to disengage the tool in an emergency.
Key Technical Specifications and Operation
Function: To engage and retrieve equipment with internal fishing necks. It is primarily used when the target device is stuck or when the operation requires a “shear-up” safety release mechanism.
Mechanism: The tool features spring-loaded dogs that compress as they enter the internal profile of the fish neck and then expand into the locking groove.
Shear-Up Release: Unlike the GS (shear-down), the GU requires a deliberate upward jarring action to shear the internal pin. Once sheared, the core moves upward, allowing the dogs to retract into the housing and release the fish.
Application Strategy: The GU is often preferred when there is a risk of debris accumulation below the tool. In such cases, downward jarring might be ineffective or impossible, making the upward release of the GU a critical safety advantage.
Compatibility: The GU utilizes the same dog sets as the GS series, ensuring compatibility with standard internal fish neck profiles across various manufacturers.
Customization and Materials
Core Conversion: The GU can often be converted to a GS configuration by swapping the internal core and spring components, providing flexibility for different well programs.
Material: Manufactured from high-tensile alloy steel. NACE MR0175 versions are available for sour service (H2S) to prevent brittle failure of the latching mechanism.
Reach Adjustment: Available with different core lengths to accommodate varied internal fish neck depths
