Technical Description and Specifications

The R Running Tool is an external-mandrel tool used to deploy and set downhole equipment equipped with internal locking profiles, such as “R” series landing nipples. It is designed to carry the device into the well and release it only after the lock mandrels have been successfully expanded into the nipple profile.

Key Technical Specifications and Operation

• Function: To run and set “R” and “RN” type lock mandrels in their corresponding landing nipples. It is a shear-up-to-release tool, ensuring the device is securely locked before the tool string is disconnected.

• Mechanism: The tool holds the lock mandrel by its internal fishing neck. As the tool string is lowered into the nipple, the lock mandrels are forced into the profile.

• The Setting Process: Once the lock mandrel reaches the target depth, downward jarring is used to drive the lock into the “set” position. After the lock is expanded and holding, a deliberate upward jarring action shears the pin in the R Running Tool.

• Positive Release: Upon shearing the pin, the core of the tool moves, allowing the lug segments to retract. This provides a positive release, leaving the lock mandrel in the well and allowing the BHA to be retrieved.

• Operational Advantage: The R Running Tool is highly regarded for its “selective” capability when used with certain locks, allowing it to pass through several nipples of the same size before setting in the desired one.

Customization and Materials

• Compatibility: Specifically designed for use with “R” and “RN” internal locking mandrels, though variations exist for other proprietary profiles.

• Material: Constructed from high-strength alloy steel. For wells with corrosive fluids, NACE MR0175 compliant versions are available to prevent stress corrosion cracking in the high-stress dog and pin areas.

• Shear Sensitivity: Different shear pin materials (Brass, Steel, or Aluminum) can be used to customize the force required to release the tool based on well depth and BHA weight.
