The Slickline S Pulling Tool is an external-reach retrieval tool designed to engage and recover downhole equipment with external fish necks. The “S” series is the industry standard for retrieving devices where the fishing neck is on the outside of the tool. Crucially, the S Pulling Tool is a shear-down-to-release tool, making it the primary choice when the retrieval operation requires upward jarring to free a stuck fish.

Key Technical Specifications and Operation

• Function: To latch onto and retrieve downhole tools with external fishing necks. It is commonly used for pulling gas lift valves, plugs, and other flow control devices that do not have internal profiles.

• Mechanism: The tool features a set of spring-loaded dogs housed within a skirt. As the tool is lowered over the external fish neck of the target device, the dogs expand over the “head” of the fish and snap into the recess below it.

• Shear-Down Release: This tool is designed with a safety release that activates via downward jarring. If the fish cannot be pulled, the operator jars down to shear the pin. This moves the internal mandrel, allowing the dogs to expand and release their grip on the external fish neck.

• Upward Jarring Capability: Because the release mechanism is triggered by downward force, the S Pulling Tool allows for heavy, sustained upward jarring to pull a stuck tool without the risk of accidentally releasing it.

• Operational Advantage: The “S” profile is widely recognized for its high tensile strength, allowing for significant pulling force to be applied to the fish neck.

Customization and Materials

• Reach Options: Available in SS (Short), SM (Medium), and SL (Long) reach configurations. Choosing the correct reach is vital to ensure the dogs align perfectly with the shoulder of the external fish neck.

• Material: Constructed from high-strength alloy steel. For H2S (sour) service, NACE MR0175 compliant versions are manufactured to prevent hydrogen embrittlement in the latching dogs.

• Dog Profiles: Dogs can be customized to fit specific manufacturer fish neck diameters and angles.
