Description
PCE Lubricator
Technical Description and Specifications
The Lubricator consists of high-pressure pipe sections used to house the Bottom Hole Assembly (BHA) above the wellhead. It acts as an atmospheric chamber that allows the operator to bleed off well pressure, enabling the insertion or retrieval of the tool string while the well remains live and under pressure.
Key Technical Specifications and Operation
Function: To provide a pressure-contained environment for the BHA. It is installed between the Blowout Preventer (BOP) and the Stuffing Box. Once the tool string is pulled into the lubricator, the lower valves are closed, and the pressure inside the lubricator is bled off, allowing safe access to the tools.
Modular Design: Lubricators are manufactured in standard lengths (usually 8ft, 10ft, or 20ft sections). These sections are joined using Quick Unions to reach a total height sufficient to accommodate the entire length of the BHA plus any recovered “fish.”
Pressure Testing: Every lubricator string must be pressure tested after assembly. Most sections include a Bleed-off Port or “needle valve” to safely vent pressure to a flare line or tank before breaking the unions.
Internal Diameter (ID): The ID must be large enough to provide clearance for the largest tool in the BHA (often the Gauge Cutter or specialized Spring Jars) to prevent the tool from becoming stuck during high-speed retrieval.
Integral Construction: Modern lubricators are typically “Integral,” meaning the Quick Union hubs are machined directly onto the pipe rather than welded, providing superior strength and fatigue resistance in high-pressure or sour environments.
Customization and Materials
Material: Typically constructed from 4140 Alloy Steel or 17-4 PH Stainless Steel. For sour service, they are heat-treated to meet NACE MR0175 standards to prevent sulfide stress cracking.
Coatings: Internal bores can be coated or polished to reduce friction and minimize corrosion from stagnant wellbore fluids.
Connection Types: Available with various industry-standard Quick Unions, such as Bowen, Otis, or Guiberson styles, to ensure compatibility with existing PCE stacks.
