Description
PCE Quick Test Sub
Technical Description and Specifications
The Quick Test Sub (QTS) is a specialized pressure-containing component installed in the Pressure Control Equipment (PCE) stack, typically positioned between the lubricator sections or above the Blowout Preventer (BOP). Its primary purpose is to allow the operator to pressure test the connection that was broken to insert or retrieve the tool string, without having to bleed off and re-test the entire lubricator string.
Key Technical Specifications and Operation
Function: To perform a localized pressure test on a specific Quick Union connection. This significantly reduces downtime between runs, as the operator only needs to test the small volume within the QTS seal area rather than the full volume of the lubricator.
Mechanism: The QTS features two O-ring seals (or T-seals) positioned on either side of a test port. When the Quick Union is made up, the test sub creates a small annular chamber between the two seals.
The Testing Process: A small hydraulic hand pump is connected to the QTS test port. Fluid is pumped into the annular space to the required test pressure. If the pressure holds, it confirms that the primary union seal is secure.
Time Efficiency: In deep-well operations where the lubricator may be 60ft to 90ft long, using a QTS can save hours of rig time by avoiding the need to fill and bleed the entire stack for every tool change.
Safety Verification: It provides a mechanical “double check” of the most frequently handled connection in the stack, ensuring no human error occurred during the makeup of the union.
Customization and Materials
Compatibility: Must be matched to the specific Quick Union profile in use (e.g., 4-3/4″ – 4 Thd, 5-3/4″ – 4 Thd).
Material: Manufactured from high-tensile 4140 Alloy Steel or 17-4 PH Stainless Steel. All units are NACE MR0175 compliant for sour service ($\text{H}_2\text{S}$).
Test Port Options: Available with Autoclave, NPT, or specialized high-pressure hydraulic fittings.
