Description

Bottom Sheave: Technical Description and Specifications

The  Bottom Sheave is a heavy-duty pulley assembly anchored to the wellhead, rig floor, or a dedicated “pedestal” at the base of the lubricator. Its primary function is to redirect the slickline wire from the winch unit (horizontal pull) into a vertical path through the Stuffing Box and into the wellbore.

Key Technical Specifications and Operation

  • Function: Changes the direction of the wire while maintaining a consistent bend radius to prevent wire fatigue or “kinking.” It is designed to handle the high lateral tension generated by the winch during jarring or heavy pulling operations.

  • Sheave Wheel Diameter: Typically matched to the wire size to prevent stress. Common diameters are 16″ or 20″. The groove is precision-machined to support the wire and prevent it from “climbing” or jumping out of the wheel.

  • Swivel and Tilt: Features a heavy-duty swivel shackle or hook that allows the sheave to align itself perfectly with the line of pull from the winch. This “self-aligning” capability prevents uneven wear on the wire and the sheave groove.

  • Safety Cage & Guard: Every bottom sheave must be equipped with a Wire Guard or “Cage” that prevents the wire from jumping off the wheel if there is a sudden loss of tension (e.g., if a tool hits an obstruction).

  • Load Monitoring: High-spec units include an integrated Load Pin or a mounting point for a weight indicator (Martin-Decker type). This allows the operator to monitor the “line pull” or tension in real-time at the winch console.

Customization and Materials

  • Wheel Material: Usually manufactured from hardened alloy steel or specialized composite materials (like Nylatron) to reduce friction and minimize wear on expensive alloy slickline wires.

  • Bearing System: Equipped with high-load, sealed-for-life roller bearings or tapered bearings to ensure smooth rotation even under extreme tension.

  • Certification: Must be load-tested and certified for a specific Safe Working Load (SWL), typically ranging from 3 to 10 tons.
