Description
Slickline Blind Box
Key Technical Specifications and Operation
The Slickline Blind Box is the “hammer” of the downhole tool string. It is a simple, robust, and heavy-duty tool designed specifically for delivering high-impact downward jarring blows. Unlike gauge cutters or bailers that have internal bores for fluid bypass or debris collection, the Blind Box is a solid, flat-bottomed component. This solid construction ensures that 100% of the kinetic energy from the stem and jars is transferred directly to the target downhole.
Key Technical Specifications and Operation
Function: To dislodge stubborn obstructions, push junk to the bottom of the well, or shift completion components that have become stuck. It is also a critical tool in fishing operations, used to intentionally shear the wire at the rope socket by striking the top of the lost tool string.
Solid Impact Face: The bottom surface is flat and precision-machined. In many high-spec models, the bottom 20mm to 50mm of the tool undergoes high-frequency induction hardening (typically HRC 40-45) to prevent the face from “mushrooming” after prolonged heavy jarring.
Fluid Interface Detection: Because the Blind Box has no bypass ports, it acts as a piston when it hits a liquid surface. Operators use this characteristic to “feel” and accurately identify the depth of fluid interfaces (oil/water or gas/liquid) through line tension spikes on the weight indicator.
Sizing Strategy: The OD of a Blind Box is usually selected to be just slightly smaller than the tubing drift. This ensures it provides maximum coverage over the obstruction, preventing the tool from slipping past a “fish” or wedging debris between the tool and the tubing wall.
Fish Neck: Features an integral Industry Standard Fish Neck to allow for easy recovery with a pulling tool should the wire fail during heavy jarring.
Customization and Materials
Material: Typically manufactured from 4140 Alloy Steel for high impact resistance. For operations in corrosive wells, it is available in 17-4 PH Stainless Steel or specialized alloys meeting NACE MR0175 standards.
Tapered Profiles: While the standard version is a straight cylinder, “tapered” Blind Boxes are available to help guide the tool through slightly deformed tubing or past minor restrictions.
Weight Customization: Longer versions (up to 12 inches) can be manufactured to add localized weight at the very bottom of the string for specific “beating” tasks.
