Description
PCE Grease Injection Control Head
Technical Description
The Grease Injection Control Head/Unit is the “engine” behind the liquid-seal system. Its primary role is to maintain a constant differential pressure —ensuring that the grease pressure entering the stuffing box always exceeds the wellhead pressure. This prevents wellbore gases or fluids from migrating up through the flow tubes, effectively creating a “liquid plug” around the moving wire.
Key Technical Specifications and Operation
Function: To provide a continuous, high-pressure supply of sealing grease to the grease injection stuffing box. It acts as the command center for monitoring well pressure versus injection pressure.
Differential Pressure Control: The unit typically utilizes air-driven hydraulic pumps (like Haskel or similar) to boost grease pressure. It is designed to maintain a safety margin (usually 500–1,000 psi) above the current wellhead pressure.
Grease Reservoirs: The unit includes high-capacity tanks or “totes” of specialized viscous grease (sealant) designed to resist being washed away by wellbore hydrocarbons or gases.
Return System: In some advanced “closed-loop” systems, the control head also manages the Grease Return Line, which captures grease that has passed through the flow tubes for filtration or disposal, preventing environmental contamination.
Emergency Shut-in: Integrated into the control panel are the controls for the Chemical Injection and often the remote actuators for the Slickline BOP, providing a centralized safety hub for the operator.
Customization and Materials
Pump Configuration: Dual-pump systems (Duty/Standby) are common to ensure that if one pump fails during an operation, the grease seal is not lost.
Portability: Units are available as skid-mounted frames for offshore platforms or truck-mounted for land-based operations.
Instrumentation: Digital or analog gauges for Wellhead Pressure, Injection Pressure, and Air Supply Pressure. High-spec models include data logging for pressure testing certification.
