Technical Description
The Bottom Nose (or Bottom Sub) is the final component at the leading edge of a perforating gun string. While it appears to be a simple end cap, it performs several critical functions to ensure the success of the wireline mission.
Pressure Containment: As the terminal plug for the gun carrier, the Bottom Nose prevents wellbore fluids from entering the gun string. It utilizes high-specification O-rings to maintain an atmospheric environment inside the carrier, which is essential for the effective detonation of shaped charges.
Streamlined Entry: The “Nose” is typically tapered or rounded (bull-nose design) to help the tool string navigate through wellbore restrictions, liners, and casing transitions without snagging or hung-up issues.
Ballistic Termination: It provides a secure mechanical anchor for the end of the detonating cord. This ensures the cord remains under proper tension and correctly positioned for the final charge in the string.
Shock Absorption & Ballast: Manufactured from heavy, heat-treated alloy steel, it adds weight to the bottom of the string to assist in gravity-fed deployments and helps absorb the end-force of the detonation wave.
Environmental Resistance: Built to withstand the same extreme conditions as the rest of the string, it is rated for temperatures up to 400 F / 200 C and pressures up to 25,000 psi.
