Description

Perforation Electrical Firing Head

Technical Description

The Electrical Firing Head is the primary interface between the surface control system and the downhole perforating guns. It is designed to convert an electrical signal sent via the wireline cable into a localized ballistic event that initiates the detonation train.

  • Safe Initiation: It houses an electrical detonator (typically a resistor-equipped or EFI type) that is shielded against stray voltages and radio frequency (RF) interference to prevent accidental surface detonation.

  • Pressure-Balanced Design: To ensure reliability at extreme depths, the firing head is designed to be pressure-balanced. This prevents wellbore fluids from compressing the internal components, ensuring the electrical contacts remain intact even at pressures up to 25,000psi.

  • High-Temperature Resilience: Rated for temperatures up to 200 C / 400 F, the firing head utilizes specialized elastomers and ceramic insulators to maintain electrical integrity in HTHP environments.

  • Sequential Safety: Many designs incorporate a “Pressure-Armed” feature, where the firing head only becomes electrically active once it reaches a specific downhole hydrostatic pressure, providing an extra layer of safety for surface personnel.

  • Modular Compatibility: Designed with standard thread connections (such as 111/16″ or 2-7/8″), it integrates seamlessly with Casing Collar Locators (CCL) and various gun sizes.
