Description
Pressure Test Cap
Technical Description and Specifications
The Pressure Test Cap is a heavy-duty, threaded “blind” cap that connects to the male or female Quick Union of a PCE component. It serves as a structural and pressure-containing end-point, allowing the operator to fill a section with fluid and apply hydrostatic pressure to verify the integrity of the body, seals, and threads.
Key Technical Specifications and Operation
Function: To provide a pressure-tight seal on the end of a lubricator section, BOP, or Tool Trap. This allows for “off-line” pressure testing of individual components to ensure they meet safety certifications before being brought to the rig floor.
Test Port Integration: Almost all Pressure Test Caps feature a central or offset 1/2″ NPT or Autoclave port. This port serves two purposes:
Inlet: To connect the high-pressure test pump line.
Bleed/Vent: To allow air to escape while filling the tool with fluid, ensuring a safe hydrostatic test (as trapped air can be dangerous under pressure).
Structural Safety: Because the cap must withstand the full axial force of the test pressure (which can exceed 100,000 lbs of force on larger IDs), it is engineered with massive wall thicknesses and precision-machined threads.
Dual Utility: In addition to testing, these caps are often used as high-integrity Shipping Caps to protect the internal polished bores and Quick Union threads from corrosion and impact damage during transit.
Customization and Materials
Material: Forged from high-strength 4140 Alloy Steel. For chemical or sour service testing, they are available in 17-4 PH Stainless Steel or with NACE MR0175 compliance.
Connection Matching: Available in all major Quick Union profiles (Bowen, Otis, Elmar, etc.) in both Male and Female configurations.
Handle Options: Larger caps for 5.125″ or 6.375″ IDs often feature welded “T-handles” or knurled outer diameters to assist the operator in manual makeup.
