Description
PCE Pump-In Sub
Technical Description and Specifications
The Pump-In Sub (also known as a Circulating Sub) is a high-pressure ported component installed within the Pressure Control Equipment (PCE) stack, typically located just above the Blowout Preventer (BOP) or between lubricator sections. It provides a dedicated entry point for fluids to be pumped into the wellbore or lubricator string while the slickline wire is in place.
Key Technical Specifications and Operation
Function: To allow for the injection of kill fluids, chemicals (like methanol for hydrate prevention), or corrosion inhibitors into the well. It is also used to equalize pressure across the BOP rams or to bleed off pressure from the lubricator string during decommissioning.
Well Control: In emergency “well kill” scenarios, the Pump-In Sub is the primary connection point for high-pressure pump lines to deliver heavy mud or brine to suppress wellbore pressure.
Hydrate & Debris Management: In cold environments or high-pressure gas wells, the sub is used to pump methanol or glycol into the stack to prevent hydrate “plugs” from forming around the tool string or wire.
Equalization: It allows the operator to pump fluid into the lubricator to equalize pressure with the wellbore before opening the BOP rams, ensuring the tool string doesn’t “jump” due to a pressure differential.
Port Configuration: Usually features a single or double side port, commonly equipped with a 1/2″ NPT or 1″ Autoclave connection, often protected by a high-pressure needle valve or a check valve.
Customization and Materials
Material: Manufactured from high-tensile 4140 Alloy Steel or Stainless Steel. To withstand the corrosive nature of kill fluids exposure, all units are heat-treated to meet NACE MR0175 standards.
Connection Types: Fitted with industry-standard Quick Unions (Bowen, Otis, etc.) to match the existing PCE stack ID and pressure rating.
Port Sizes: Ports can be customized based on the required flow rate for kill operations or chemical injection.
