Technical Description and Specifications

The Slickline Downhole Wire Scratcher is the “exfoliator” of the wellbore. It is a specialized cleaning and remediation tool designed to mechanically scrub the internal walls of the production tubing. Its primary purpose is to remove soft-to-medium deposits—such as paraffin wax, light scale, salt, or asphaltines—that can restrict flow or prevent the proper setting of downhole plugs and packers.

Key Technical Specifications and Operation

• Mechanical Scrubbing Action: The tool consists of a central mandrel fitted with high-tensile, spring-tempered wire bristles. As the tool string is moved up and down across a target interval, these bristles provide a 360-degree abrasive action that scours the tubing ID.

• Interchangeable Bristle Bundles: Most professional scratchers are designed with replaceable wire “cartridges” or bundles. This allows the operator to swap out worn bristles or change the bristle size to match different tubing weights and IDs without replacing the entire tool body.

• Surface Preparation: Beyond cleaning, scratchers are frequently used before setting a bridge plug or a packer. By “scratching” the landing zone, the operator ensures a clean metal-to-metal contact or a superior rubber-to-metal seal, significantly reducing the risk of seal failure.

• Fluid Bypass: The design naturally allows for high fluid bypass through the bristle matrix, preventing the tool from acting like a piston. This ensures that the tool can be run at higher speeds without the risk of “floating” the tool string.

• Standard Fish Neck: Like all BHA components, it features an integral Industry Standard Fish Neck at the top for safe recovery if the wire is lost.

Customization and Materials

• Bristle Material: * Spring Steel: Standard for aggressive scale and paraffin removal.

  • Brass / Bronze: Used for “non-sparking” applications or to avoid scratching specialized internal coatings or CRA tubing.

  • Stainless Steel: Preferred for highly corrosive environments.

• Body Material: Manufactured from 4140 Alloy Steel or 17-4 PH Stainless Steel, heat-treated to meet NACE MR0175 requirements for sour service.

• Connection Profile: Standard 15/16″ or 1-1/16″ UN pin/box connections.
