The JD Pulling Tool is a specialized external-reach retrieval tool designed to engage and recover downhole equipment with external fish necks. A member of the “J” series family, the JD is a shear-down-to-release tool. It is widely regarded as one of the most versatile pulling tools in slickline operations, used primarily when the operator needs to apply heavy upward jarring to a fish without the risk of disengagement.

Key Technical Specifications and Operation

• Function: To latch onto and retrieve tools with external fishing necks. It is commonly used for pulling various flow control devices, such as subsurface safety valves, plugs, and gauges.

• Mechanism: The tool consists of a cylinder containing spring-loaded dogs. As the JD tool is lowered over the external fish neck of the target device, the dogs expand to pass over the shoulder of the neck and then snap shut to secure the tool.

• Shear-Down Release: The JD is designed for safety. If the fish cannot be pulled, the operator delivers a downward jarring impact to shear the internal pin. This allows the core to move relative to the dogs, causing them to expand and release the fish.

• Upward Jarring Strength: Because the release mechanism is triggered by downward force, the JD tool is ideal for “heavy fishing” where intense upward jarring is required to break a tool loose from scale or sand.

• Telescopic Action: The internal mandrel design allows for a slight telescopic “stroke” which helps in delivering a clean shear when the release is required.
