Description
Slickline Spang Jar
Technical Description and Specifications
The Slickline Spang Jar is a critical mechanical impact tool used within a bottom-hole assembly (BHA) to deliver high-energy upward or downward force. By utilizing the mass of the stem above it and the travel within its telescopic design, the Spang Jar converts wireline movement into a localized “hammer” effect. This is essential for shearing pins, setting flow control devices, and performing fishing operations.
Key Technical Specifications and Operation
Function: To provide mechanical jarring action (upward or downward) through the rapid acceleration and sudden deceleration of the tool string mass, creating the impact force required to actuate downhole tools.
Design: Featuring a classic telescopic “link” or “sliding” design, the jar consists of an inner mandrel and an outer housing (or “links”). The free-sliding travel between these components allows the operator to build momentum before impact.
Operational Mechanism: Unlike hydraulic or spring-loaded jars, the Spang Jar is purely mechanical. The force of the impact is directly proportional to the weight of the stem positioned above the jar and the speed at which the slickline operator manipulates the wireline.
Bi-Directional Impact: The tool is designed to deliver both upward jars (to pull/retrieve) and downward jars (to set/drive) simply by changing the direction of the wireline stroke.
Stroke Length (Customizable): Standard jars typically offer a 20-inch or 30-inch stroke. Longer strokes allow for higher velocity and greater impact force, while shorter strokes are used for precision work in shallow or restricted environments.
Connection (Customizable):
Standard interfaces include industry-standard slickline pin and box threads.
Custom order connections are available for compatibility with proprietary quick-connect systems (e.g., QLS, HQC) and specific high-torque threads.
Material (Customizable):
Construction: High-strength, heat-treated alloy steel (e.g., AISI 4140/4340) to prevent link deformation under heavy repeated impacts.
Custom material options are available, including NACE MR0175 compliant alloys for high-H2S environments and stainless steel versions for highly corrosive well fluids.
Critical Parameters (Customizable Stroke and OD):
Outer Diameter (OD): Available in all standard slickline sizes (e.g., 1-1/2″, 1-3/4″, 1-7/8″).
Impact Rating: Can be engineered with reinforced strike faces for heavy-duty fishing operations. Clients must specify the required stroke length and target tubing environment when placing a custom order.
