Description
Slickline Tubing End Locator
Technical Description and Specifications
The Slickline Tubing End Locator (TEL) is a fundamental depth control and correlation tool utilized to accurately determine the precise bottom terminal depth of the production tubing string or to identify specific dimensional changes within the completion string (e.g., casing shoe, liner top, or specific collar profiles).
Key Technical Specifications and Operation
Function: To provide a reliable, distinct, and repeatable physical depth reference by hanging up on a known completion profile, typically the sharp shoulder at the very bottom of the production tubing string.
Design: A simple, non-actuated, solid-body tool featuring a top sub, a main body, and a critical bottom section defined by an external shoulder or tapered skirt. This shoulder is machined to a precise Outer Diameter (OD).
Operation: The tool is run downhole. As the shoulder passes below the minimum restriction of the tubing string, the operator runs the tool back up (POOH). The sharp shoulder of the TEL provides a distinct mechanical hang-up (“kick”) on the tubing end’s down-facing edge. This mechanical feedback is registered at the surface as a rapid, momentary increase in line tension, providing the precise depth reference.
Correlation: The depth reading is crucial for correlating slickline depth counters with downhole permanent references (like production packers or nipples) before running flow control devices.
Connection (Customizable):
Standard interfaces include proprietary slickline pin threads (e.g., 15/16″-10 UN, 1-1/16″-10 UN).
Custom order connections are available to ensure compatibility with non-standard threads and proprietary quick-connect systems.
Material (Customizable):
Standard construction uses high-strength alloy steel (e.g., AISI 4140).
Custom material options are available, including NACE MR0175 compliant alloys for sour service and highly corrosive well environments.
Critical Parameters (Customizable Shoulder OD):
Shoulder OD: The critical dimension, which must be large enough to catch the tubing end but small enough to pass through any necessary restrictions above it.
Custom ODs are fabricated to optimize the hang-up indication for specific tubing ID sizes and known internal tolerances. Clients must specify the target tubing ID and the required shoulder diameter when placing a custom order.
