Description
Universal Pulling Tool
Technical Description and Specifications
The Universal Pulling Tool (UPT) is a versatile and widely utilized slickline control tool designed for the deployment, retrieval, and setting of downhole flow control devices (e.g., plugs, standing valves, safety valves, sleeve shifting tools) that feature a standardized fish neck profile. Its versatility comes from its ability to function in either a “shear-up” or “shear-down” release mode.
Key Technical Specifications and Operation
Function: To run and pull subsurface devices that incorporate a matching standard fish neck profile (e.g., Otis X, R, B, or Baker F profiles). The tool transfers both tensile (pulling) and compressive (setting) force from the tool string.
Design: A modular assembly consisting of a top sub, a body, an internal core (or skirt), and a set of spring-loaded dogs or fingers that engage the locking profile of the fish neck.
Mechanism (Controlled Release): The UPT uses precisely sized and rated shear pins to govern the release force.
Shear-Up Mode (Running/Pulling): The tool is designed to release (shear the pins) when an upward tensile force exceeding the pin rating is applied, used for retrieving devices.
Shear-Down Mode (Setting): The tool is configured to release when a downward compressive force exceeding the pin rating is applied, used for setting locking mandrels or plugs.
Fish Neck Compatibility: The tool is characterized by the core size which matches the target fish neck profile. The size (e.g., 1.500″ OD) and type (e.g., G, S, GS) determines which lock profile can be engaged.
Connection (Customizable):
Standard interfaces include proprietary slickline pin threads (e.g., 15/16″-10 UN, 1-1/16″-10 UN).
Custom order connections are available to ensure interchangeability with all major competitor proprietary threads (e.g., Otis, Baker, Camco) and specialized quick-connect systems.
Material (Customizable):
Standard construction uses high-strength alloy steel (e.g., AISI 4140).
Custom material options are available, including NACE MR0175 compliant alloys (e.g., specialized stainless steel or Inconel) for sour service and high-corrosion environments. Certification documentation is provided.
Critical Parameters (Customizable Size & Shear Ratings):
Core Size and Profile: Tools are fabricated to match specific, non-standard fish neck profiles.
Shear Pin Rating: Compatibility with specific shear pin materials and shear values is maintained. Clients must specify the target fish neck profile (type and size) and the required shear release load when placing a custom order.
