ePunch Electro-Mechanical Tubing & Casing Puncher
Overview
The ePunch Electro-Mechanical Puncher is a non-explosive downhole perforating solution designed for precision tubing and casing remediation. Utilizing a modular architecture, the ePunch connects directly to the ePOWER Electro-Mechanical Setting Tool (the core power unit) to form a complete five-module system: Battery, Motor, Gearbox, Pull Rod, and Punching Module.
By harnessing the 10-inch stroke of the ePOWER “K-Set” platform, the ePunch deploys and retracts the punch button in a single, controlled motion. This electro-mechanical actuation eliminates the need for gunpowder, hydraulic lines, or mechanical jarring, offering a safer, more reliable alternative to traditional explosive perforating and mechanical punch tools.
Key Features & Benefits
1. Non-Explosive, Safe Operation
Feature: Powered entirely by the ePOWER battery module; no gunpowder, shaped charges, or hydraulic fluids are required.
Benefit: Eliminates the cost, red tape, and delays associated with gunpowder transportation permits and storage. Operators do not require special explosive handling qualifications, significantly simplifying logistics and enhancing HSE compliance.
2. Positive Retraction / Single-Stroke Mechanism
Feature: Utilizes the full electro-mechanical stroke to both extend and positively retract the punch button.
Benefit: Unlike traditional mechanical punches that rely on gravity, spring force, or jarring to retract (often leading to stuck tools), the ePunch ensures the button retracts cleanly every time. This eliminates the risk of fishing trips and increases the success rate in deviated or horizontal wells.
3. Versatile Deployment & Control
Feature: Compatible with electric line (E-line), slickline, and coiled tubing.
Benefit:
E-line Mode: Provides real-time control and surface feedback, allowing for precise depth correlation and confirmation of punch actuation.
Slickline Mode: Utilizes a countdown trigger mechanism. The tool automatically fires after a pre-set time delay when running in hole (RIH), requiring no electrical line.
4. High-Strength Perforating Capability
Feature: Engineered to penetrate high-grade steel alloys and thick-wall tubing.
Benefit: Suitable for a wide range of completion metallurgy, including common grades such as J-55, L-80, and P-110. The focused mechanical force creates a clean hole without the radial deformation or burring associated with explosive methods.
5. Multi-Hole & Oriented Perforating
Feature: Configurable to punch single or multiple holes in a single run. The modular design allows for orientation of the punch button.
Benefit: Enables precise sand control, circulation setups, or gas lift valve installations by allowing operators to target specific azimuths within the wellbore.
6. Preservation of Wellbore Integrity
Feature: Delivers localized mechanical force rather than a high-pressure blast.
Benefit: There is no impact on the annulus and no injury to the outer casing. The sustained pressure of traditional explosive punches is replaced with controlled linear force, preventing deformation of the inner tubing or damage to the primary casing string.
Applications
Tubing & Casing Remediation: Creating circulation paths or perforations in stuck tubing strings.
Gas Lift Installation: Punching precise, oriented holes for gas lift mandrels or valves.
Squeeze Cementing: Establishing communication with the annulus for cement squeeze operations.
Water Shut-off: Perforating to allow for chemical injection or isolation treatments.
Well Kill Operations: Creating circulation points to kill the well safely.
